Amputee formed in Brooklyn, New York in 2007. Originally operating out of a repurposed industrial space that functioned as both rehearsal room and recording studio, the band spent its early years developing material through extended periods of writing and experimentation rather than live performance.

Over time, Amputee became a project spanning continents after drummer and vocalist Skuld relocated to Tokyo. Despite the distance, Skuld and guitarist Ruhin continued collaborating remotely, refining ideas over the course of several years.

That process culminated in 2014, when the band convened in Jersey City alongside Tøm Vøid (Thrall, Australia) for a recording session that would become Syzygy. Named after the alignment of three celestial bodies, the release reflects its own recurring motif of three: three musicians, three compositions, and a singular moment of convergence. Around two hours of improvised material were captured on a cellphone recording and later distilled into three expansive tracks, with bass and vocals overdubbed afterward.

Lyrically, Syzygy moves between current events, biblical imagery, and personal reflection, linking seemingly disparate themes through a shared underlying tension. The record was mixed by Paul Miller and mastered at Studio DNA.
